From ramparts to mansions – Hamina's cultural environment program is updated with the help of city residents

The City of Hamina has launched work to update its cultural environment program in the summer of 2025. The program, previously prepared in 2008, has served mainly as an inventory draft, but now the goal is to develop it into a versatile and up-to-date tool for the city's planning and building supervision, planning work related to cultural heritage, and decision-making. At the same time, the program is intended to be an easily usable data bank for property owners and everyone interested in the cultural environment.

The updated program consists of three main parts: a general description of the history of the area, a list of sites, and guidelines for managing the cultural environment. The list of sites includes buildings, landscapes, and areas that are of cultural and historical significance to Hamina, and the update aims to provide more detailed information on these sites. Special attention is paid to the accuracy of the information, the current protection status of the sites, and their cultural heritage significance. Over the years, the city has received feedback on errors and shortcomings in the current program, which is why it now wants to involve city residents in the update work. For this purpose, a public questionnaire will be opened, through which residents can provide feedback and express their own observations. The questionnaire will collect not only suggestions for repairs to existing sites, but also new site suggestions for future inventories. If you feel that a building, landscape, or place is noteworthy from the perspective of the cultural environment, you can indicate this in the questionnaire.

Hamina's cultural environment is diverse and valuable - preserving it is a shared responsibility. The city hopes that as many residents as possible will participate in the survey and help update the program to make it even more functional and comprehensive.
