Microbiological quality of bathing waters in June 2026

The microbiological quality of bathing water was good in samples taken from public beaches between June 3 and June 10, 2025. No blue-green algae or other abnormalities were detected at the beaches. 

Samples were taken from the following beaches

Hamina: Pitkäthiekat, Rampsinkari, Mustaniemi, Vähäjärvi, Merkjärvi, Salmenvirta, Neuvoton

Virolahti: Pyyhinlampi, Valkjärvi

Miehikkälä: Halmaanjärvi, Myllylampi

The microbiological quality of bathing water at beaches is assessed by measuring the Escherichia coli and enterococci in the bathing water. In coastal waters, the number of Escherichia coli bacteria must be less than 500 cfu/100 ml and the number of enterococci in the bathing water must be less than 200 cfu/100 ml. In inland waters, the number of Escherichia coli bacteria must be less than 1000 cfu/100 ml and the number of enterococci in the bathing water must be less than 400 cfu/100 ml.

The quality of bathing water is assessed by sensory analysis during sampling to determine whether cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are present, whether there is waste in the water, such as oily and tarry substances, and whether there is floating material (for example, plastic, rubber, glass and plastic bottles). 

Bathing water samples are taken five times during the bathing season (15.6 June-31.8 August) at Pitkienhiekoki and Rampsinkari beaches, the first sample is taken about a week before the start of the bathing season and the following samples are taken evenly at approximately three-week intervals. Water samples are taken once a month during the bathing season at other public beaches. In addition, repeat samples are taken if necessary if the quality requirements set for beach waters are not met.
