Flood preparedness in the Hamina and Kotka areas – Property owners' own foresight is important

The coastal areas of Hamina and Kotka and the lower reaches of the Kymijoki River are nationally significant flood risk areas. Seawater and watercourse floods can develop quickly, which is why it is important for residents and property owners to prepare themselves. The cities of Hamina and Kotka have jointly prepared flood maps and flood instructions for the areas to prevent damage.

In flood risk areas, it is the responsibility of every property owner and occupier to protect themselves and their property and to prepare for flood situations in advance. In large-scale floods, the authorities' resources are not sufficient to protect all individual properties. In large-scale floods, the task of cities and authorities is to be responsible, among other things, for securing critical services, rescue operations and, if necessary, evacuations.

Preparing for possible flooding situations

  • Find out if your property is located in a flood risk area.
  • Take care of flood protection, such as sealing drains, doors and windows.
  • Prepare in advance for possible risk situations caused by flooding.
  • Follow the warnings and instructions issued by the authorities.
  • During a flood situation, the safety of people and animals is a priority. Floodwater may be contaminated, and movement in flooded areas should be avoided.
  • In an immediate emergency, you should call the emergency number 112.
  • After a flood, it is necessary to ensure that living is safe again by checking electrical equipment, oil tanks, heating systems, wastewater treatment systems and the building's surroundings.
