Blue-green algae has been detected on Pitkienhiekok beach – swimming is not recommended for the time being
Blue-green algae was observed on the Pitkienhiekok beach on July 2, 2025. Swimming on the beach is not recommended for the time being.
The blue-green algae situation in the water can change rapidly. Warm and calm weather favors the rise of blue-green algae to the surface. If the weather cools down and becomes rainy or windy, the algae situation may improve, but if warm and calm days continue, the blue-green algae can return quickly. It is always a good idea to visually assess the condition of the swimming water before going swimming.
Blue-green algae can produce toxic or irritating substances in the water. Human susceptibility to symptoms from blue-green algae varies greatly. Water containing blue-green algae can cause skin symptoms, stomach symptoms and flu-like symptoms in swimmers. It is always advisable to limit water use if blue-green algae is visible in the water.
The health supervision of the City of Hamina monitors the blue-green algae situation and provides information as necessary.
