Mobile devices banned in basic education schools from August 1, 2025

The Basic Education Act will change on August 1, 2025, when students' use of mobile devices during lessons without the permission of the teacher or principal will be prohibited.

According to the law, the rules of order for basic education must also stipulate the use and storage of mobile devices outside of lessons. In addition to phones, mobile devices include tablets, headphones and smartwatches. The aim of the amendment to the law is, among other things, to improve workplace peace and promote learning.

The new rules of order of the city of Hamina, which will come into effect on 1 August 2025, prohibit the use of mobile devices not only during lessons but also during meals and breaks. The devices must be kept in silent mode in bags throughout the school day. Students, guardians and staff representatives have been consulted on the changes to the rules of order.
