Imperial proclamation: Catherine and Gustav arrive in Hamina

Our circular city has often had the honor of serving as a stage for visits by monarchs. Our most famous and remembered guests are probably the Russian Empress Catherine II and her cousin King Gustav III of Sweden, who first stayed in Hamina in the summer of 1783. This year they will arrive in the city no less than twice: on Saturday 17.5 May, on the 2nd anniversary of Hamina's Museum Street, and on Sunday 15.6 June, to greet international travelers.

During both of their visits, their Majesties organize an Audience, or reception, for their subjects in the stone house owned by the Crown opposite the Elizabeth Church (now the City Museum, Kadettikoulunkatu 2B). The first reception begins at noon and ends at one o'clock. They give a second hour-long reception at two o'clock after noon. As a sign of their popularity, their Majesties allow the public to ride in their stately covered carriages for a small fee (5€) when they are not using them themselves. Departures from Raatihuoneentori.

The subjects are welcome to attend the audiences as they are, and they do not need to worry about their clothing or etiquette. The monarchs' courtiers will gladly advise on how to approach their majesties. Admission to the audiences is free. Hamina Hywät Asukkaat organizes them in cooperation with Hamina Region Guides and Hamina City Museums. The horse rides are provided by Viivi Honkimaa from Lammi Farm with her Finnish horse Epel.
