The decision-making of the Urban Development Committee on June 17, 2026 will include, among other things, the fate of the large flagpole.

The Hamina Urban Development Committee will meet on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at 4:30 PM.

The meeting will discuss, among other things, the situation of the large flagpole in Hamina again. On 27 April 2026, the City Board decided to exercise the right of withdrawal for the decision made by the Urban Development Committee on 22 April 2026 regarding the large flagpole. The City Council has discussed the situation in evening school and the matter has now been brought back to the Urban Development Committee for a decision. The coating on the large flagpole has been observed to be peeling and cracking, which is due to the high silicon content of the steel and the exceptionally thick, brittle zinc layer it causes. In its current state, the pole is not safe, as pieces coming off it can pose a danger to people and property.

The agenda also includes displaying the street plan for the extension of the Hiltz route (pole spacing 750-1624). The road alignment has been changed from the original plan, especially to protect the breeding and resting places of the flying squirrel and access routes. Based on the inspection by the Licensing and Supervision Agency, the project does not require an exemption permit, as long as the planned mitigation measures are implemented.
