Hamina mittens
The city of Hamina organized a design competition from 16.12.2023 to 1.9.2024 with the theme What would Hamina look like on mittens? The competition entry was to produce Hamina-themed mittens and a pattern that could be shared with anyone who wanted to use them. The model can also be used in the form of various courses. The people of Hamina voted for their favorite and the winner was announced at the Hamina Autumn Market on 11.10.2024.
The Town Hall and Flag Tower, designed by Suvi Pous, were selected as the Hamina mitten.

Hamina mittens, Flag Tower and Town Hall (with a thumb hole)
Size: 160 cm
Yarn: Drops Lima or similar: pink, white, dark gray, yellow 50 g
Needles: double pointed needles size 3,5 or according to your hand size
Rib knit, knit in the round alternately K1 and P1
Stockinette stitch in the round: knit all rows in stockinette stitch
Right hand mitten, FLAG TOWER
Cast on (48) sts and divide the sts between four needles. The change point of the row is between needle IV and I. Work rib (k1, p1) for approx. 10cm.
Knit stocking stitch (all right side) following the pattern grids so that the outside of the mitten, Pattern, is on needles 1 & 2. To follow the pattern, it is a good idea to combine the stitches from needles 1 & 2 onto the same needle. On needles 3 & 4, Pattern 2, the inside of the mitten.
When the pattern has been knitted for approx. 6 cm, mark the thumb hole on needle III on the next round as follows: first knit 3 sts from the bottom of the needle with the mitten yarn and knit the next 6 sts with a different color yarn.
Move the stitches knitted in a different color back to the left needle and continue in stocking stitch until your index finger is covered.
Make the band decreases at the tip of the mitten. Knit 1 st at the beginning of needles I and III, make a pull-through decrease (= slip 1 st as if to knit, knit 1 st and pull the slipped st over the knitted one) and knit 2 sts together, knit 1 st at the end of needles II and IV. Make the decreases every row until there are 8 sts left on the needle. Cut the yarn, pull it through the remaining stitches and fasten off well.
Thumb
Remove the different colored marker thread and pick up stitches at the top and bottom of the thumb hole. Also pick up additional stitches on both sides of the thumb so that there are a total of 16 stitches on the thumb. Divide the stitches onto three needles and knit stocking stitch in the round.
When you have finished knitting and half of the thumb nail is visible, decrease at the tip. At the end of each needle, knit 2 tog until 4 sts remain. Knit 1 st and pass the remaining sts from left to right over it. Cast off well. Finish the mittens by lightly steaming them.
Left hand mitten CITY HALL
Knit the right mitten in mirror image, i.e. make a thumb hole on needle size 4.
