Preparatory education for basic education

In Hamina, preparatory education for basic education is organized for students of basic education age who were not born in Finland and whose Finnish language skills are not sufficient to study in a basic education group. The student studies in preparatory education for an average of one academic year. The aim of the education is to gain the skills for studying in basic education.

The education provider directs the student to the most suitable preparatory education group. Preparatory education for basic education follows the principles of the Basic Education Preparatory Education Curriculum. Teaching in the group takes place in Finnish and focuses specifically on studying the Finnish language. Other subjects are also studied during preparatory education for basic education. In addition to studying the Finnish language, the aim of preparatory education is to promote the student's balanced development and integration into Finnish society. Each student has their own study programme and is entitled to the same support measures as students in basic education.

During the teaching period, students are integrated into basic education groups that correspond to their age level. The aim of integration is to promote the development of the student's study skills and Finnish language skills, as well as the acquisition of the content of different subjects. Student integration often begins with skills and arts subjects.

After preparatory education, the student moves to basic education in the year group corresponding to his or her age level.
