Desire – what is it?

Halutus is the student council of Hamina Upper Secondary School. It is elected once a school year in elections where all students and teachers can vote for candidates. Halutus promotes the interests of Hamina Upper Secondary School students, participates in developing school well-being, actively participates in school events and organizes theme days throughout the school year.

Tutors

What is tutoring?

Tutoring means supporting, helping, guiding and guiding. Second and third year students help new upper secondary school students adapt to a new educational institution and upper secondary school studies. Tutoring is a goal-oriented activity, the aim of which is to facilitate the start of upper secondary school studies. Tutors promote group formation through various exercises and games during the academic year. In addition, tutors market upper secondary school to 9th graders and their guardians. It is possible to receive a course/study unit from active tutoring activities. The tutors are supervised by study counselor Anni Sarell.

Who is the tutor?

A tutor is a second or third year student who acts as a helper and support for first year students throughout their first year of high school. The tutor introduces new students to high school and its practices. The purpose is for the tutor to tell new high school students the things they would have liked to hear when they started high school. Tutors are selected in April and receive training for their role in May. In the spring, tutors plan group formation for future high school students in collaboration with teachers. Group formation begins in August on the first day of school.

Why tutoring?

The aim of tutoring is to improve community and introduce new students to each other. Tutors strive to have a positive impact on the school's atmosphere and spirit through their own activities. The purpose of the activities is to bring joy to new students and at the same time bring variety to everyday life at school. Tutors act as a link between old and new students and teachers. We feel that tutoring is an important part of our high school's activities and we strive to develop it annually.

The purpose of academic guidance is to support, help and guide students so that each student can cope with their studies in upper secondary school as well as possible and is able to make appropriate and suitable decisions regarding education and career choice.

Study counselors

Minna Taimela and Emmi Pakkanen are the study counselors at Hamina Upper Secondary School. The purpose of study counseling is to support, help and guide students so that each student can cope with their studies at upper secondary school as well as possible and is able to make appropriate and suitable decisions regarding education and career choice.

The study advisor is responsible for class-based guidance, especially guidance regarding study, education and career plans. Class-based guidance deals with matters related to study guidance that do not need to be discussed with each student individually. The study advisor provides personal and small group guidance in preparing the student's own study program and career planning.

Special education teacher

Satu Lepistö works as a special education teacher at Hamina Upper Secondary School. A special education teacher plans and implements support measures to enable students to cope with their studies despite learning difficulties or other challenges. It is worth contacting a special education teacher if, for example, you need help with scheduling your studies or finding your own learning style and developing your study skills. In addition, the special education teacher is responsible for reading tests and prepares statements to the Matriculation Examination Board regarding the need for special arrangements for the high school entrance exam.

School nurse

Kela support for upper secondary students

Students can receive support for their studies from Kela. It is possible to receive study grants and school travel grants for their studies. Those entitled to free education can receive school travel support if the distance to school is at least 7 km one way and if there are at least 10 travel days in a calendar month. School travel support is applied for separately for each academic year.

School travel allowance is applied for at OmaKela. Log in kela.fi page to Omakela. School travel allowance is primarily granted for public transport. If you use public transport, Kela grants the right to purchase after submitting the application and you can purchase a travel ticket, for example, from the ticket seller's online store/app or from the online service Rinkel. If you are entitled to free education and the conditions for school travel allowance are met, you will receive a travel ticket free of charge. If there is no public transport, you can apply for support for the mode of transport you arrange yourself, in which case Kela will pay the support to you.

If you are not entitled to Kela's school travel allowance, you can purchase either a junior ticket (7-16 years) or a student ticket.

Student certificate and student card

A student ID is required for various applications or to receive student benefits. You can get a student ID from the office secretary.
