Simple life – summer in the archipelago 18.6.2025-26.9.2026
Summer residents have been coming to the Hamina and Vehkalahti archipelagos to spend summers there for over 150 years. The longing for fresh sea air and a simple life without too many amenities has encouraged city dwellers in particular to move near the water. Local islanders rented their homes to summer residents before the summer cottage plots were divided up. Many of the current summer residents are descendants of year-round residents or their families have settled on the island as summer residents decades ago.
What is it like to spend the summer in the archipelago of the Gulf of Finland? How has the life of summer residents changed over the century and what were the environmental issues of the past and present? What kind of relationship does one develop with a long-term summer destination? These questions are answered by the exhibition at the Hamina Town Museum, which focuses on the islands of Tammio and Kuorsalo.
