The City of Hamina invests in the movement of children and young people
The city of Hamina has received state grants from the Ministry of Education and Culture to increase physical activity among children and young people. This project period will focus particularly on physical activities and upper secondary school students, and will enhance club cooperation together with the Finland for Movement program. The project periods are for the academic year 2025-2026.
Hamina Youth Services has received a state grant of €55,000 for the Hamina hobby model in accordance with the Finnish Hobby Model (HSM) for the fifth time. The goal of the Hamina hobby model is to increase the well-being of children and young people. The purpose is to enable students in grades 1-9 to have an enjoyable and free hobby during school days, fulfilling the wishes of the schoolchildren. The project combines child-friendliness and orientation, equality, strengthening good practices and operating methods, accessibility and cooperation between actors. Activities will be organized in the afternoons on school premises or in the immediate vicinity, for example swimming/water heroes, band activities, moped and bicycle repair and e-game clubs will be organized on the school premises. From the beginning of 2023, new provisions were added to the Youth Act (955/2022) on youth hobby activities in accordance with the Finnish Hobby Model and on government subsidies for the activities.
In addition, the city has received a state grant of €52,000 for the Hamina Sports Hobby Path to Club Activities project. The aim of the project is to develop a model for the city of Hamina that combines Finnish Hobby Model clubs and sports clubs. The purpose of the model is to offer children and young people the opportunity to move from Finnish Hobby Model clubs to sports club activities, supporting children's sports hobbies and promoting an active lifestyle. This model supports children's inclusion and well-being by offering them diverse sports opportunities and the continuity offered by the club.
State aid of €31 has also been received for the development of the Mobile School structures. The educational and training services and sports venues and services of the City of Hamina received funding to strengthen and establish the physical activity culture of Hamina's comprehensive schools. The grant sought will be used to develop the city's inclusive and physical activity culture (the Mobile School model) for all the city's comprehensive school students and staff. The aim is to reach schoolchildren who are not very active in particular. In addition, the project is preparing for the amendment to the Basic Education Act on the use of physical activity culture in basic education that will come into effect on 000 January 1.1.2026.
