The City of Hamina was involved in the energy efficiency agreement for the period 2017–2025
The purpose of the Energy Efficiency Agreement is to increase energy efficiency, save energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It is a voluntary operating model between the state, municipalities and other sectors, through which Finland meets the savings obligations set by the EU Energy Efficiency Directive.

During the 2017–2025 contract period, our goal was to increase our energy efficiency by 3,828 MWh/a, and we achieved 93% of this goal, or a total of 3,556 MWh/a!
The savings achieved directly reduce the municipality's carbon dioxide emissions and bring significant financial savings in operating costs. The entire city is to thank for this.
Together, we can make our energy use even more efficient during the new agreement period 2026–2035. The new ten-year period is an excellent opportunity to learn from the previous period and set the bar even higher.
The following priorities will help ensure the success of the new season:
- Real estate digitalization: The control of ventilation and heating automation is being improved based on data.
- Waste heat recovery: We are investigating locations where the heat from exhaust air or wastewater can be utilized.
- Staff involvement: Continuously increasing energy awareness in everyday activities and working methods.
- Renewable energy: Let's investigate whether we could utilize solar power more extensively in the city's own properties.
