Hamina's Education and Training Committee approved several reforms regarding education

At its meeting held on August 13, 2025, the Education and Training Committee of the City of Hamina decided on several reforms regarding education in accordance with the agenda.

The committee approved the Hamina comprehensive schools and upper secondary school study tour guide. The guide was prepared to clarify study tour practices and provide guidance on planning trips, including fundraising and free admission. Study tours and camp schools are considered equal school activities, and they are free of charge for students as required by law. School study tours can be supported by funds jointly raised by students and guardians, but fundraising must be voluntary. All students have the right to participate in the activity regardless of whether they have participated in the fundraising.

The committee also decided to approve an extension of the processing time for school transportation applications to 2–3 weeks. The previous processing time of 14 days has proven to be too short, especially during the busiest times of the school year, such as when registering for new school students and students transferring to middle school.

In addition, the committee approved changes to the chapters of the local basic education curriculum. The updated chapters take into account, among other things, the new Basic Education Act that came into force on 1 August 2025. It was added to the curriculum that a special examination is organised for persons living in their own municipality who have the right to basic education but do not have a school-leaving certificate. The update of the guidance plan was also approved. The updates mainly concern professional titles, outdated support concepts and a new section on the transition to basic education for adults. Updates to the School Path for Students with an Immigrant Background guide were also approved. The changes concerned chapters 3 and 5 of the guide, to which clarifications were added on responsibility issues.
