The demolition project of Hamina's former town hall (Puistokatu 2) is suspended

The City of Hamina has applied for a demolition permit for the former City Hall (Puistokatu 2) and the utility building located on the property. The Permit Committee has granted the demolition permit at its meeting on 27 January 2026. The deadline for appealing the demolition permit is 10 March 2026.

The Hamina Linnoituse wanhat talot ry (Old Houses of Hamina Fortress) has submitted a conservation proposal to the Permit and Supervision Authority to protect the buildings located on the property under the Building Heritage Act, to suspend the demolition permit process aimed at demolition, and to impose a prohibition on endangering the site. 

The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has, by its decision of 6 March 2026, ordered the buildings to be placed under a ban on endangerment, which means that the demolition process will be suspended until the Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has made a decision on whether to protect the buildings with measures in accordance with the Building Heritage Act. During the ban on endangerment, the building and its surroundings must be maintained in such a condition that it meets the requirements of health and safety and does not cause environmental harm or spoil the environment.

Due to the decision, the community housing project planned for the site will be delayed or possibly canceled.
