Hamina brings commercial rents into line with the law – the city terminates contracts that are lower than market prices

Today, 28 May 2026, the City of Hamina has terminated the lease agreements for commercial premises, which have been reviewed as part of the adjustment measures. The city treats city residents equally. The reason for terminating the lease agreements is the significantly low rent level of the properties, which lags significantly behind the current market rent in the area. If the city rents commercial premises at a lower than market price to a company or other entity engaged in economic activity, the procedure violates EU state aid regulations, the Municipal Act and national competition law. As the owner, the city has the customary and legal right to demand the return of the right of possession of the property it owns after a certain period of time (the notice period) so that the use of the premises can be brought into compliance with the law.

The city has delivered notices of termination to those concerned and the city will not provide any further information on the matter.
