Living Landscape – Tammio and Kuorsalo as depicted by artists 2.6.–9.8.2026
The changing landscape of the archipelago in the Gulf of Finland, depending on the weather, time of day and season, has inspired artists for over a century. Exhibition at the Hamina City Museum Living landscape – Tammio and Kuorsalo as depicted by artists brings to the public treasures from private collections by Magnus Enckell, Ortamo Mattila, Tapio Haili and Ilona Silent. Most of the works are on display for the first time.
All the artists and works in the exhibition are connected by a relationship with the island. Master of Symbolism Magnus Enckell spent summers at his sister Helmi Enckell's villa on Kuorsalo Island and even planned to build his own studio on the island. Colorist, painter and graphic artist Ortamo Mattilan got to know Tammio with his wife and later they were brought back by their love for the island's nature and landscapes. Artist and graphic artist Tapio Haili spent two summers as a summer guest in Tammio with his stepdaughter and student, making woodcuts and painting. Artist, interior architect and designer Ilona Silenti is from Kuorsalo on her mother's side and spent her childhood summers on the island.
Living landscape is a show of love for the marine nature of the eastern Gulf of Finland and complements the Hamina City Museum, which was open last summer. Simple life – spending the summer in the archipelago exhibition (open until 26.9.). In addition to art, there are photographs from the Mattilo and Silenti family albums on display. The exhibition opens to the public on 2.6. at 10 am and will be open until 9.8.2026.
