Food premises means any building, apartment, part thereof or other premises where foodstuffs intended for sale or other distribution are prepared, stored, transported, marketed, served or otherwise processed, but not a place of primary production.

Registered food business

A written notification of the commencement of food operations and any substantial change in operations must be submitted to the municipal food inspector for registration purposes no later than 4 weeks before the commencement of operations or any substantial change. Notification of the suspension or termination of operations must also be submitted without delay.

Approved food premises

If a food premises processes food of animal origin before retail sale, approval must be applied for from the health authority before commencing operations or substantially changing operations. Approval must be applied for 60 days before commencing operations or substantially changing operations. Approval is also required for food warehouses where food of animal origin is stored for more than 48 hours and from which the food is delivered to another approved food premises. In connection with the application for approval, the supervisory authority must be provided with, among other things, a written self-monitoring plan.
