Hamina's Tar Island
The center of Hamina is expanding to the Tervasaari waterfront area. The magnificent, maritime Tervasaari is located less than a kilometer from the market square. Green parks and a lively waterfront promenade with activities make the area an attractive destination for living and leisure. The Tervasaari area includes, among other things, Oolanninpuisto, a skate park, a guest marina, a beach, two barbecue shelters and a padel court.
To support the development of the Tervasaari port area, the city is experimenting with closing the port area to vehicle traffic during the summer from 22 May to 31 August 2026.
Objectives of the experiment to close the Tervasaari port area to vehicle traffic:
Closing the Tervasaari area to vehicle traffic will increase safety in the port area, as vehicles and pedestrians will be directed to use different traffic and parking areas. The safety of cyclists will also increase when vehicle traffic is blocked in the port area.
The experiment will develop the area's recreational use opportunities. The area is a popular leisure destination and the experiment will enable a more diverse use of the area for events and recreation.
The third goal is to increase the opportunities for existing and potentially new operators in the region to expand and develop new business opportunities.
Technical operation of the bollards in the Tervasaari quay area
-
There are bollards, or traffic barriers, in two places in the Tervasaari harbour area, next to the Tullimakasiini building and next to the tourist vehicle parking area, next to the harbour area roundabout.

The Tervasaari traffic barriers are located in the harbor area, after the pedestrian crossing.
The other traffic barriers are located at the end of the parking area next to the Tullimakasiini. -
There are several different technical solutions for raising/lowering bollards, which can be used to control them.
Next to the bollards is a gray cabinet with a display terminal where you enter a code (* and numbers) or show a key tag over the numbers and the bollards open for driving.

The numeric code (*and numbers) is entered into the reader or the key fob is shown to the reader over the numbers. -
Each company/operator in the Tervasaari area is given an operator-specific code, which they can also provide to suppliers and staff. So-called key tags are also provided to entrepreneurs, which means that the bollards open by showing the tag to the reader. The code can be changed if the code is misused.
Event organizers are also given their own code for organizing the event.
To get the code, you can contact vitalitynetwork@hamina.fi
-
If you need access to the port area occasionally, for example to land a boat, you will receive a personal code for opening from the City of Hamina's Asio reservation system. The person making the reservation will receive a personal code by email, which is valid for transactions in the port area on that day.
Tervasaari also has a boat launch in Lepikönranta, which can be accessed without a code..
-
The driver receives an access code when ordering a disabled taxi when the customer orders transportation to the Tervasaari harbor area, for example to restaurants in the area.
-
The matter has been discussed with the rescue authority.

Get a code to open the barriers from the Asio booking system
You can get an access code to the harbour area from the City of Hamina's Asio booking system, for example for boat launching. You will receive the code by email after booking. The code is valid for the current day.
