Sustainable Fortresses Project
Hamina Fortress and Kyminlinna Castle in Kotka will be developed into responsible recreation and tourism destinations
The Sustainable Fortresses project is underway in the cities of Hamina and Kotka, with the primary aim of developing Hamina Fortress and Kotka Kyminlinna into responsible recreational and tourist destinations. The project, co-financed by the European Union, is managed by the Kotka-Hamina regional development company Cursor Oy. The project period is 1.1.2026-30.4.2027.
The development work of the Hamina Fortress and the needs assessment and planning of service complexes will create more impressive tourism complexes and a more interesting service offering for tourists. The goal of the City of Kotka is to gradually open Kyminlinna to the use of city residents, tourists and cultural events. The Sustainable Fortresses project meets the needs of both cities to develop fortresses into responsible tourism and recreation destinations.
The project's objectives are:
- Developing both fortresses into responsible recreation and tourism destinations
- Preparation of a strategic development and financing plan for the Kyminlinna and Hamina fortress complexes
- Plans for responsible and economically sustainable tourism and visitor experience for fortresses
- Strengthening regional, national and international cooperation networks
- Utilizing tourist data as a basis for development – leading with knowledge
- Sustainable fortresses – developing a common tourism product through multi-stakeholder, participatory cooperation
- Taking into account tourism sustainability thinking (ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability) in the design of tourism products
The target group is rural businesses and service providers, municipalities, other public organizations related to the development of fortified areas, and third sector operators and entrepreneurs.
The following services are offered to the target group:
- Kyminlinna master plan
- Hamina Fortress Master Plan
- Increasing cooperation and networking between the Kotka-Hamina fortification areas both nationally and internationally
Participate in workshops and contribute your ideas for the development of the fortress
The Sustainable Fortresses project will develop the Hamina Fortress into a responsible recreation and tourism destination. The project will implement a development plan (masterplan) for the Hamina Fortress area, which will compile both the current state of the fortress area and the identified development needs.
Two workshops will be organized for both residents and entrepreneurs for the development plan. The workshops will provide different views on how the Hamina fortress area should be developed to improve the comfort of residents and how, for example, entrepreneurs could benefit from the fortress area and the unique circular station plan in their own businesses.
