The city or municipality is responsible for arranging temporary care for pets found at large and recovered for a period of 15 days.
The Animal Welfare Society provides advice on catching and trapping animals.
According to the Animal Welfare Act, which came into force in 2024, the municipality must compile and publish statistics on recovered stray animals annually.

During 2025, 70 animals were housed in the South Kymenlaakso Animal Welfare Association's stray animal shelter, of which 28 were dogs and 42 cats. Of these animals, 15 were not picked up and were transferred to Ekey's ownership after 15 days. According to the owners, 40 of these were runaways and the rest were free-roaming animals that were transported to the shelter by outsiders. We had to euthanize 2 cats for animal welfare reasons.
